Staying Well Through Winter

Winter brings extra health challenges, from coughs and colds to the risks of a cold home. A little planning helps you stay comfortable and healthy.

Keep warm

  • Heat the rooms you use most to a comfortable, steady temperature
  • Wear several thin layers rather than one thick one
  • Use a hot water bottle or electric blanket to warm the bed — but not both together
  • Have warm food and hot drinks regularly through the day

Protect against illness

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the free flu vaccine, which is recommended for older New Zealanders. Wash your hands often and well, especially before meals.

If you feel unwell with a high temperature, a bad cough, or breathing difficulties, contact your doctor or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free advice any time.

Stay connected

Cold, dark days can make it easy to stay indoors and see fewer people. Keep in touch with family and friends by phone or video call, and arrange regular visits where you can.
