Preventing Falls Around the Home

Falls are one of the most common causes of injury for older people, but they are not an inevitable part of getting older. A few practical steps can make a real difference.

Make your home safer

  • Remove loose rugs or fix them down with non-slip backing
  • Keep walkways clear of cords, clutter and low furniture
  • Make sure stairs and hallways are well lit, with a light switch at each end
  • Put a non-slip mat in the bath or shower and consider grab rails
  • Keep everyday items within easy reach so you avoid climbing or stretching

Look after your body

Staying active helps keep your muscles strong and your balance steady. Gentle activities like walking, tai chi or simple strength exercises can all help.

Have your eyes checked regularly and keep your glasses clean and up to date. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medicines, as some can cause dizziness.

Wear the right footwear

  • Choose well-fitting shoes with firm, non-slip soles
  • Avoid walking in socks or loose slippers on smooth floors
  • Replace worn-out shoes that no longer give good support

If you do fall

Try to stay calm. If you are not hurt, roll onto your side, get onto your hands and knees, and use a sturdy piece of furniture to help you up slowly.

If you are hurt or cannot get up, call for help. A personal medical alarm can give you and your family peace of mind.
